100% Chinese Immersion:
According to the Center for Applied Linguistics, immersion programs are the most effective type of world language program available in U.S. schools. Immersion students develop proficiency in the target language by hearing and using it to learn academic content rather than only studying the language itself.
At YHIS, the pre-school through kindergarten classes are taught in 100% Mandarin Chinese.

Nurturing Environment:
Our teachers are loving, patient, and highly skilled with advanced degrees and experience in early childhood education. We work closely with parents to provide a nurturing environment to support and challenge all learners.
At YHIS, individual attention to every student is guaranteed: 7:1 student to teacher ratio for pre-school and pre-K, and approximately 10:1 for kindergarten.
Every student in the Early Childhood Program is paired with an older student in the higher grades, and the school buddies interact warmly and regularly in the school. This is a school where everyone is known and valued.

Program Essentials:
For the Early Learning Program (20 months to 3-year olds), Pre-school (3- to 4-year olds) and Pre-K (4- to 5-year olds) programs, parents can choose from full-day (9 am-3:30 pm) and half-day (9 am-12:30 pm) schedules. Children of Kindergarten are required to attend five full days.
Children of pre-kindergarten and younger classes are enrolled on a rolling basis, if space permits. Children of Kindergarten and up typically start the school year in September.
Daily before care starts at 7:30 am, and after care ends at 6:30 pm. For students attending the afterschool programs, a teacher will escort the children to the afterschool activity for the day. Please click here for fees and details of the extended care program.
Inquiry-based Curriculum:
While youngsters are fully immersed in Chinese, they learn a hands-on, inquiry-based curriculum that covers not only traditional content areas but also visual and performing arts and exploration of nature.

At Pre-school, students
•    sing, recite poems and nursery rhymes, and dramatize stories
•    immersed in stories and texts, and learn to express their feelings and ideas using a combination of writing, drawing, writing, crafting, and dictation

At Pre-K, students
•    understand and respond to school rules and classroom routines
•    carry out conversations within a familiar and meaningful context
•    understand the main idea of a new story, and repeat key elements in the story
•    learn to speak Chinese with native or near-native accent and tones
•    describe familiar events using words and simple sentences
At Kindergarten, students
•    learn to understand verbal communication within semi-familiar to unfamiliar context
•    speak Chinese with native or near-native accent and tones
•    learn to understand the key elements of a new story and retell the story with prompting and support
•    master a vocabulary of high frequency of approximately 300 to 800 words
•    form good reading habits and enjoy reading
•    recognize 50-100 characters and read simple phrases and texts with comprehension
•    follow appropriate handwriting skills and stroke order when writing characters
•    engage in inquiry-based writing projects.

At Pre-school, students
•    develop concepts of number, quantity, shape, time and direction
•    develop skills of sorting, comparison, one-to-one correspondence, and sequencing
At Pre-K, students
•    further develop their understanding of number and quantity, such as counting up and down, identifying the adjacent number and even and odd numbers
•    using real objects and events, explore the concepts and skills related to addition and subtraction
•    learn to identify 2-D shapes, classify objects by one and two attributes, and understand the temporal relations of daily occurrences.
At Kindergarten, students
•    read, write, count, compare and compute numbers to 50
•    select and explain an appropriate method for solving a problem
•    sort real objects by attributes, create graphs and tables using real events, and compare quantities and attributes of objects and events in their realm of experience
•    sort, describe and compare 2-D and 3-D shapes, and explore the paths, regions and boundaries of their immediate environment and their position
•    find, describe and create simple patterns in their world

Science & Social Studies

The learning of science and social studies are fully integrated in the units of inquiry.
At this level, students
•    develop their observational skills by using their senses to gather and record information
•    use their observations to identify simple patterns
•    make predictions and discuss their ideas
•    explore the way objects and phenomena function, and recognize basic cause and effect relationships
•     examine change over varying time periods and form the beginning knowledge that different variables and conditions may affect change
•    become aware of different perspectives, and learn to show care and respect for themselves, other living things and the environment.

Visual Art

At Pre-school, students
•    observe and reproduce familiar images with dots, lines and shapes
•    explore shades of colors
•    engage in a wide variety of hands-on craft projects as an integral part of the units of inquiry
At Pre-K, students
•    learn about lines, shapes and colors, and the interactions of these elements
•    learn about the basic structure of a drawing, and practice coloring
•    explore a variety of media and tools to express their inner vision
•    bring out their imagination and creativity through many open-ended drawings
At Kindergarten, students
•    learn about colors and their impact and effect through appreciation, discussion and hands-on experimentation
•    explore a wide variety of art media, including crayon, watercolor, marker, oil pastel and acrylics
•    free to be imaginative and creative with many opportunities for open-ended drawings and art projects
•    appreciate a thoughtful selection of artwork for aesthetics and meaning

The three main goals for music education at this level are learning to sing, music appreciation, and experimenting with musical instruments. Students learn to recognize and appreciate basic elements such as rhythm, pitch, and intensity. We aim to instill in students an enjoyment of and appreciation for music.

Physical Education

The goal of physical education at this level is to help students develop confidence in their personal physicality through body awareness, balance, coordination, flexibility and strength.
